wp-block-heading\">Why am I here,<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"fa49\">Well I started down this path when I was in elementary school, mainly with skateboarding. I was fascinated by the graphics people would print on these decks of wood, what an odd shape for someone to do an art piece on? they all had to follow a similar pattern and were bound to such strict rules, yet were all so different. It was also interesting how often the designers of these would \u201cbreak the 4th wall\u201d, I put air quotes because it\u2019s not really 4th wall breaking but I can\u2019t think of a better way to describe it. What I mean by this is having the board represent being a chocolate bar, or a large piece of hardware, or a giant credit card. They all seemed very fun and playful. I also recall drawing on my clothes and other various personal items at the time, which could also have been a foreshadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4d47\">High school started and I was constantly drawing on clothes, my homework, basically anything I was able to. I also found myself leaning towards video editing and art based classes much more than before. I wasn\u2019t a big fan of straight traditional drawing, nor did I find myself super involved when painting or doing ceramics. I enjoyed photography but more as a pass time rather than something to attempt to do full time. around the end of high school, a manager of mine (who also happened to graduate from UMD Duluth) after noticing and talking to me about what I mentioned above recommended that I check out the graphic design field. I was hesitant, but kept it in the back of my mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"079c\">Towards the end of high school, I ended up in various marketing classes. I never was a big fan of these, but what I always found myself signing up for was the position of the person who was in charge of designing the flyers, adds, what have you. I then graduated high school, and eventually came up to Duluth for my freshmen orientation day. Pretty early on in this day, I met someone who was fairly similar to me and gravitated towards them for most of the activities. Eventually, we started the process of registering for our first semester classes and had to attempt to pick a major, or go undeclared. Not having put much thought into it, I asked my new acquaintance what they were planning on going into, and sure enough they said graphic design. I entered the undeclared room and when discussing what I was possibly thinking about going into, I mentioned that I had been hearing about graphic design quite a bit. They recommended that I give it a shot sooner rather than later, and here we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WRITTEN BY<a href=\"https:\/\/tacticxscopez.medium.com\/?source=post_sidebar--------------------------post_sidebar-----------\">Not Zach Dornfeld<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-align-center has-huge-font-size wp-block-heading\">The Food Truck: A Case Study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"b846\">The Food Truck was a project I have worked on over the last 5 months; this being my senior year of design school at UMD Duluth. I decided to write about this project today because I felt I learned quite a bit about the process of designing a brand from scratch. Prior to this project, I would typically have a general direction set in mind while diving into a new work. While I would usually have alternative ideas in the very early stages of the project, I would rarely waver from this original concept. That was until I started working on a design system for a non-profit food truck concept for my Senior Design Studio class, The Food Truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"91df\">Starting out the project, I had a pretty solid idea of the direction I wanted to go in. I had a general concept for the look and feel of the brand, and was leaning in a modernistic, sleek approach shown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/8002\/1*jI0tj_jQ6G4j3xva6tsSJQ.png\" alt=\"Image for post\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"8543\">I started doing extra brand assets, developing patterns, and throwing stuff on mockups. Typically, once I was this far into a design process I felt I couldn&#8217;t back down, as I had already put way too much time into the process. But due to the current pandemic situation, a miss communication happened and threw a slight curveball into my plan. Instead of being more prepared with a single direction, we were instructed to have 3 separate directions lightly glossed over. This wasn\u2019t a major deal as we were still very early in the design process, but as stated earlier I was not accustomed to scrapping a semi-flushed out idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"4107\">As you could have guessed already, this direction did not get picked. And to follow with the clich\u00e9, I would say I am very happy that it didn\u2019t. I\u2019ve been told this story by countless teachers, peers, and professors throughout the past couple of years, and to be honest I thought I would have learned simply through that. But anyone who is smart enough to be able to read this has also surely learned by now, that learning the hard way is quite often the fastest way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miro.medium.com\/max\/4800\/1*Wf5_KfGVtKLmQOedxUrwWQ.png\" alt=\"Image for post\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"1b9b\">This project was a non-profit start up company. I decided to have mine be a traveling food truck, which would strive to reduce waste while also feeding the community. The main way The Food Truck would achieve this would be through collecting food that hadn\u2019t gone bad yet, but would be still be discarded at the end of the night by local restaurants and businesses. For example, locations such as Jimmy Johns and Subway often have left over bread at the end of the night that is still good for at least a week when refrigerated, but is thrown out due to it no longer being as fresh as we deem edible these days. Pizza joints such as Little Caesars will throw away multiple whole pizzas at the end of the night due to their hot-N-ready program.
